Valuing the Arts

Published in PARSE Journal, Issue 2: The Value of Contemporary Art, this essay is based on research gathered for my MA research project Valuing the Arts: Precarity, Punks and the Ploughshare. That project featured interviews with several arts organisations on the way in which they articulated and implemented a system of value around the production and dissemination of art. PARSE provided the opportunity to revisit this material and draw further conclusions on how the contested value of the arts can or cannot complicate and enrich the dominant reductive concept of what is of worth to society and the ideals that inform our contemporary understanding of value that has been impoverished by an overwhelming economic imperative.
